OCAA GOLFERS DOMINATE FIRST ROUND LEADERBOARD AT NATIONALS

ROSENEATH, P.E.I. - Humber College picked up where it left off at the 2011 PING Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Golf National Championships on Wednesday, as the defending men's team champions are the first round leaders thanks to a strong showing by 2010 CCAA medalists Adrian Cord and Mark Hoffman.

Cord jumped out to a four-under 68 to lead all golfers after Day 1. Hoffman is on Cord's heals after posting a two-under 70 as both Humber athletes were the only competitors to break par.

The 2011 PING CCAA Golf National Championships are taking place at the Brudenell River Golf Course in Roseneath, P.E.I. and are hosted by Holland College.

Hoffman is the two-time defending Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) men's champion, and the reigning national silver medalist. Cord has won consecutive OCAA silver medals, and a CCAA bronze last year.

Five OCAA golfers rank in the Top 10, including Fanshawe's Taylor Booth and Durham's David Lang who are tied for fourth place with scores of one-over 73. Humber's Conor Hache sits in a tie for ninth place shooting a three-over 75.

Defending OCAA bronze co-medalists Alex Dumais of Humber and Brennan Smith of St. Lawrence-Kingston are tied for 24th overall shooting six-over 78.

With a first round score of 291, Humber leads the men's team competition by 12 strokes over host Holland College of P.E.I. Durham sits in fourth place with a score of 304.

In the women's competition, 2011 OCAA champion Tiffany Albath of Durham is in third place, nine strokes behind clubhouse leader Josee Doyon of Champlain St Lawrence in Quebec after she shot even par. Albath's 81 is three strokes better than teammate Kayleigh Kraemer and Georgian's Nicole Belcourt, who are tied for fifth shooting 84. Albath and Kraemer are defending national silver and bronze medalists, respectively.

Durham leads the women's team competition with Albath and Kraemer's combined score of 165. Georgian is in fourth place, 11 strokes off the pace. Two-time defending bronze medalist Jasmine Paton had a tough round shooting 92. Paton is currently tied for 15th individually, along with St. Clair's Ashley Unrau.

Round 2 of the 54-hole tournament will take place Thursday, followed by Friday's final round.
