CORNWALL, Ont. - The top golfers in the Ontario Colleges
Athletic Association (OCAA) are set to take over the Cornwall Golf
and Country Club for the 2011 OCAA Golf Championships, hosted by
St. Lawrence College.
The tournament runs from Monday through Wednesday.
Student-athletes competing in the scheduled 54-hole tournament
represent 16 Ontario college campuses, including Boréal,
Cambrian, Confederation, Durham, Fanshawe, Fleming-Peterborough,
George Brown, Georgian, Humber, Mohawk, Niagara, St. Clair, St.
Lawrence (Brockville, Cornwall and Kingston), and Seneca.
Humber is the five-time defending OCAA men's team champions, and
returns a strong group to provincials. Defending men's individual
gold and silver medalists Mark Hoffman and
Adrian Cord will make their swan song at the OCAA
championships, having both just represented Canada last month at
the Summer Universiade in Shenzhen, China. Hoffman is the top
intercollegiate golfer in the nation, winning Golf Canada's
Canadian University/College Championship last May. Humber's men
earned a 2010-11 triple crown of sorts, winning the team title at
this tournament, provincials and nationals.
Durham's men were runner-up to Humber last year, and will look to
make its case for an OCAA title in 2011. Durham's David
Lang is coming off a tournament win at Niagara on
Wednesday where he shot a five-under par 67, one stroke better than
Humber's Alex Dumais.
Other men's teams that may threaten Humber's bid for a six-peat
are Georgian and Niagara. Georgian won team bronze at both the
provincials and nationals last year. Keegan Tyers,
who finished in fifth place at last year's OCAA championship, is
back with Georgian this year. Defending OCAA men's individual
bronze medalist Ryan Curran leads a Niagara team
which is coming off a win at the Niagara Invitational.
Another notable veteran making his return to the OCAA
championships after a one-year hiatus is Fanshawe's Taylor
Booth, the OCAA silver medalist in 2009.
Defending OCAA women's individual champion and national bronze
medalist Kayleigh Kraemer is coming off a
four-stroke win at the Niagara Invitational, and is looking to
partner up with teammate Tiffany Albath once again
to bring another women's team title to Durham. Albath is the
defending silver medalist at both the provincials and
nationals.
Other women making their return to provincials are defending
individual OCAA bronze medalist Jasmine Paton of
Georgian, and Heather MacKenzie of St. Clair, who
placed sixth at last year's OCAA tournament. MacKenzie and St.
Clair teammate Ashley Unrau recently teamed up to
take the women's team title at the Niagara Invitational, finishing
second and fourth, respectively.
Rain is currently in the weather forecast for Monday, but is
expected to clear the remainder of the tournament. Leaderboards
will be made available on OCAA.com courtesy of the Golf Association
of Ontario.
