WELLAND, Ont. - The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA)
golf season is now in full swing as Niagara College hosted it
annual invitational at LochNess Links Golf Club in Welland, Ont. on
Wednesday.
A usually windy links course was somewhat mild on Wednesday, with
some OCAA golfers taking full advantage.
Defending OCAA women's champion Kayleigh Kraemer
of Durham proved to be in championship form, shooting an 81 to win
the 18-hole tournament by four strokes. It marked Kraemer's second
straight win at the Niagara tournament. Heather
MacKenzie of St. Clair finished in second place.
MacKenzie's 85, along with teammate Ashley Unrau's
fourth-place score of 88 lifted St. Clair to the women's team
title.
Defending OCAA bronze medalist Jasmine Paton of
Georgian also had a strong day, shooting 86 for third place.
On the men's side, David Lang made it an
individual sweep for Durham golfers, as he shot a five-under par 67
to win the men's individual title, one stroke ahead of Humber's
Alex Dumais. Five golfers tied for third place
with scores of 72, including the Niagara trio of Chad
Currie, Chris Hargest and Cody
Connor. As a result, Niagara earned the men's team title.
Also shooting 72 were Jair Saenz of Mohawk, and
Keegan Tyres of Georgian.
Defending OCAA bronze medalist Ryan Curran shot a
76 to contribute to Niagara's team victory.
OCAA golfers will not have much time to rest on their laurels.
Student-athletes will now travel to Cornwall, Ont. for the 2011
OCAA Golf Championships, hosted by St. Lawrence College at Cornwall
Golf and Country Club. The scheduled 56-hole tournament runs from
Monday through Wednesday.
