Student-athletes are nominated by their respective athletic departments.
Jakob Curtis
School: Fanshawe
Program: Computer Programming & Analysis
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Volleyball
Hometown: Hamilton, Ont.
Jakob Curtis was the lead setup man for Fanshawe last week, helping navigate the Falcons to two wins including a comeback effort against the St. Clair Saints in a five-set thriller. Jakob picked up 38 assists against St. Clair and 22 against the Sheridan Bruins to give him 60 between the two matches. Jakob's play not only helped the Falcons go 2-0 last week but also made the life of Fanshawe's outside hitters much easier. Jakob is currently among the OCAA league leaders averaging 7.79 assists per set. The Falcons improved to 3-1 with the two victories.
Carlo De Grandis
School: Conestoga
Program: Powerline Technician
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Rugby
Hometown: Brantford, Ont.
Carlo De Grandis was impactful on both sides of the ball in Conestoga's thrilling 37-33 OCAA quarter-final home victory over the Seneca Sting on Nov. 1. Scoring a pair of tries in the opening 17 minutes of play, the first-year flanker also made several big defensive stops for the Condors as they held onto the four-point victory. It marked the first time in OCAA action that Carlo reached the try zone, doing it twice in such an important match. The Condors now move onto the OCAA semifinals for a meeting with the undefeated Durham Lords on the road this Saturday.
Tess Kelly
School: Niagara
Program: Early Childhood Education
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Volleyball
Hometown: Niagara Falls, Ont.
Tess Kelly's poise, leadership, IQ and athleticism have really shown as she makes a huge leap in Year 3. On Nov. 1, the third-year middle blocker recorded nine kills on a .538 hitting percentage while contributing four blocks and three service aces for a total of 16 points against the Boréal Vipères. The following day, Tess continued her dominance against the Cambrian Shield with 12 kills on a .571 hitting percentage, adding seven blocks and four aces for an impressive 23 points. Niagara won both matches in four sets. Tess currently sits atop the OCAA leaderboard for hitting efficiency and second for total blocks.
Tyrelle Miller
School: Lambton
Program: Liberal Studies
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Basketball
Hometown: Brampton, Ont.
Tyrelle Miller was up to his old antics on Oct. 29 on the road against the Conestoga Condors. The fifth-year guard scored a game-high 23 points on 7-of-14 (50.0 per cent) shooting from the field to help lead the Lambton Lions to their third-straight win to start the season with an 85-81 victory. Tyrelle added seven rebounds, six assists, three steals and one block in the win. For the season, Tyrelle is third among OCAA student-athletes in scoring averaging 19.7 points per game, while also contributing 6.3 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game.
Brooklynn White
School: Loyalist
Program: Fitness & Health Promotion
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Basketball
Hometown: Innisfil, Ont.
Brooklynn White put on an offensive show for the Loyalist Lancers on Halloween night, scoring 31 points in a 100-58 win over the Georgian Grizzlies. The third-year guard shot 11-of-16 (68.8 per cent) from the field, 7-of-11 (63.6 percent) from three-point range and 2-of-3 (66.7 percent) from the free throw line. This is a career high showing for the third-year athlete. Brooklynn currently leads all OCAA players averaging 23.0 points per game with a 61.5 field goal percentage. The undefeated Lancers host perennial powerhouse Algonquin on Saturday.
