TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Oct. 19.
Student-athletes are nominated by their respective athletic departments.
Brookelyn Butchart
School: Conestoga
Program: Early Learning Development
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Rugby Sevens
Hometown: Palmerston, Ont.
Brookelyn Butchart was a huge part of Conestoga's defence on Oct. 18, making numerous crucial tackles. Offensively, the second-year centre sets up plays and opens up space for teammates so they can find the try-line. With three big wins in the last weekend of play of the regular season, Brookelyn helped lead the Condors to an 11-3 record and second-place finish heading into provincials. The OCAA Women's Rugby Sevens Championship will be hosted by the Condors this Saturday at the Fountain Street Complex in Cambridge.
Alexis Cordeiro
School: Seneca
Program: Therapeutic Recreation
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Soccer
Hometown: Brampton, Ont.
Alexis Cordeiro's offensive prowess continued in Seneca's two post-season victories. The third-year forward scored once in Seneca's 3-1 win over the Sheridan Bruins on Oct. 18, then netted a hat trick in a 4-0 triumph over the Redeemer Royals to secure a berth into the OCAA final four. Alexis has now scored 21 goals in a dozen matches, counting the regular season. The OCAA Scoring Champion now heads to Windsor for this weekend's OCAA Women's Soccer Championship, where the Sting are the two-time reigning gold medalists.
Parker England
School: Georgian
Program: Civil Engineering Technology
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Rugby
Hometown: Barrie, Ont.
Parker England scored a pair of tries in Georgian's 37-5 win at Algonquin on Oct. 19. It was Parker's first multi-try match in three seasons with the Grizzlies. The third-year flanker has now scored three tries this season, and a career six in total in OCAA regular season play. The win, Georgian's second in a row, keeps the Grizzlies in the top third of the standings and a potential home playoff match as the regular season concludes this weekend. Georgian (4-1) hosts St. Lawrence (2-3) on Sunday in a rematch of last year's OCAA bronze medal match.
Franz Mella
School: Humber
Program: Sport Management
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Soccer
Hometown: Toronto, Ont.
Franz Mella opened the scoring in both halves of Humber's 5-0 victory over division-rival Niagara Knights on Oct. 18, securing a berth into the OCAA semi-finals. Four goals in two post-season matches surpasses Mella's total of two in nine regular season games. The OCAA First-Team League All-Star and the rest of the Hawks will travel to our nation's capital for a chance to defend their provincial championship. The semi-final match-up against the Seneca Sting takes on extra meaning, with the winner also advancing to next month's nationals.
