Student-athletes are nominated by their respective athletic departments.
Liam Hill
School: Loyalist
Program: Heating, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Techniques
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Volleyball
Hometown: Stratford, Ont.
Liam Hill helped guide the Loyalist Lancers to a pair of victories last week to finish the regular season with a 10-6 record and a four match winning streak. In straight sets victories over Durham on Feb. 4 and Centennial on Feb. 7, the third-year left side recorded a hitting percentage of .448, with a stat line of 16 kills, two blocks, a service ace and 11 digs. Liam averaged 3.4 points per set. The matches only get bigger from here as Liam and the Lancers play host to the Mohawk Mountaineers this Saturday in a crossover elimination match.
Ty Nguyen
School: Fanshawe
Program: Business - Accounting (Co-op)
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Badminton
Hometown: London, Ont.
Ty Nguyen had a strong showing at the Conestoga Invitational badminton tournament this past weekend, helping lead the Fanshawe Falcons to first place in the men's team standings. Ty teamed up with Thao Le to go 5-0 in men's doubles play. Ty also competed in men's singles and finished the competition with a 4-1 record, good for second place. A reigning OCAA silver medalist in men's doubles, Ty and the Falcons will next compete at the OCAA Badminton Championships being hosted by the Seneca Sting from Feb. 20-21.
Sophia Syal
School: Georgian
Program: Fitness & Health Promotion
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Basketball
Hometown: Tecumseh, Ont.
Sophia Syal scored 25 points to propel the Georgian Grizzlies to an 88-78 win over the Algonquin Wolves on Feb. 6. The rookie guard went 7-of-13 (53.8 per cent) from beyond the three-point arc and established career highs in points and made threes in a game. Sophia currently leads the East Division with 32 made threes and is averaging 12.4 points per game. The win was Georgian's first over Algonquin since Nov. 12, 2016. Sophia and the Grizzlies conclude their regular season on Wednesday when they visit the Durham Lords.
Samuel Wong
School: Centennial
Program: Social Work
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Basketball
Hometown: Scarborough, Ont.
Sammy Wong erupted for a season-high 37 points leading the Centennial Colts to a 95-75 victory over the St. Lawrence Surge on Feb. 8. The third-year player shot 13-of-18 (72.2 per cent) from the field, and an impressive 8-of-11 (72.7) from beyond the three-point arch. Sammy's been a staple for the Colts all season long, showing why he's one of the best shooters in the league. At 12-4, Centennial is in great position but still chasing first place in the East Division, one game behind the Georgian Grizzlies with two games remaining.
Sherry Wu
School: Humber
Program: Advertising & Graphic Design
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Badminton
Hometown: Ottawa, Ont.
Sherry Wu had a memorable performance at the Conestoga Invitational badminton tournament this past weekend, finishing in first place in two different disciplines. Sherry went 5-0 in the women's singles competition, and went 4-0 while teaming up with Yi Lin Meng to win the women's doubles event. Overall, Sherry helped guide the Humber Hawks to top spot in the women's team standings. A reigning OCAA gold medalist in mixed doubles, Sherry's talents will be on full display at the upcoming OCAA championships from Feb. 20-21.
Brooke Young
School: Durham
Program: Nursing
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Volleyball
Hometown: Chestermere, Alta.
Brooke Young combined for 55 assists over two matches last week as the Durham Lords finished their regular season campaign with a 14-2 record. In a three-set sweep at Loyalist on Feb. 4, the fifth-year setter recorded 35 assists while adding three kills, a service ace and four digs. Then in a home match against Fleming on Feb. 7, Brooke earned 20 assists while contributing six kills, six digs, two service aces and a block in another three-set victory. Brooke ends the season sixth among OCAA players averaging 7.77 assists per set.
