Student-athletes are nominated by their respective athletic departments.
Marley Bonnick
School: Humber
Program: Behavioural Science
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Basketball
Hometown: Brampton, Ont.
Marley Bonnick and the Humber Hawks knocked off previously unbeaten and nationally top-ranked Mohawk on Jan. 31, beating the Mountaineers by 21 on their home court. The fourth-year shooting guard tied her career-high with 21 points, adding five rebounds, while going a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. Marley is the OCAA's best at the charity stripe, with a success rate of 87.5. The Hawks (11-2) have won six straight, and now trail the Mountaineers by 1.5 games with one in hand for the race atop the West Division.
Noah Li
School: Niagara
Program: Carpentry & Renovation Technician
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Basketball
Hometown: Toronto, Ont.
Noah Li has been a key contributor off the bench for the Niagara Knights this past month, scoring 38 points in two games last week. The first-year guard recorded a career-high 24 points on 10-of-15 (66.7 per cent) shooting, including a pair of threes as the Knights defeated the Redeemer Royals on the road 94-83 on Jan. 28. Returning to home court on Feb. 1, Noah scored 14 points in Niagara's 98-93 win over the Canadore Panthers. Noah has hit double-digits in scoring in five straight games. The Knights have won three straight.
Ryan McGilvray
School: Durham
Program: Carpentry & Renovation Technician
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Volleyball
Hometown: Whitby, Ont.
Ryan McGilvray was consistent and trustworthy in two matches last week. At home against the Seneca Sting on Jan. 28, the second-year outside hitter put up seven kills on 16 attempts with three solo blocks for 10 points against the top team in the OCAA's East Division. Visiting the St. Lawrence Surge on Jan. 31, Ryan led the team in points with 10 as the Durham Lords won in straight sets. Ryan recorded eight kills, a pair of service aces and two digs in the win. The Lords have secured their spot in the OCAA crossovers later this month.
Kaarina Niemimaa
School: George Brown
Program: Interpretation (American Sign Language - English)
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Volleyball
Hometown: Ajax, Ont.
Kaarina Niemimaa filled the stat sheet with 32 points on 29 kills, two service aces, and a block, while recording 24 digs over two matches. The fourth-year outside hitter played a massive role in George Brown's five-set victory over the Georgian Grizzlies on Jan. 28, recording a match-high 17 points on 14 kills, two service aces and a block. Defensively, she posted 12 digs, just one shy of the team-high. Kaarina posted a team-best 15 points and 15 kills in a four-set defeat at the Canadore Panthers on Jan. 31. Kaarina has 100 total kills for the season.
