CONESTOGA COLLEGE 2012-13 ATHLETIC AWARDS
Andrew Harpell (Men's Rugby) and Amanda John (Women's Soccer) are Conestoga College's Athletes of the Year in 2012-13.
Conestoga College named their Male and Female Athletes of the
Year at their annual athletic banquet on Wednesday, April 10.
Amanda John is the Female Athletes of the Year
and was a member of the outdoor and indoor soccer teams. She is a
second year student enrolled in the Business Administration –
Marketing program. Amanda is a midfielder and was named an OCAA
All-Star, Indoor Soccer All-Star, won an academic scholarship and
was named her team's MVP for outdoor soccer.
"On and off the field, Amanda exhibited sportsmanship, a positive
attitude and unyielding motivation," said her coach Aldo
Krajcar. "She has the will to win and thrives in
competition. She is a true impact player on the field and it is the
passion with which she plays the game that is most admirable. I am
very happy and privileged to have coached her. She is a wonderful
young lady and I extend my deepest and most profound
congratulations on her being named this year's Female Athlete of
the Year."
This year's male athlete of the year award goes to Andrew
Harpell, a member of the varsity men's rugby team. He is a
second-year student at Conestoga in the Powerline Technician
program which is run out of its Ingersoll campus. Andrew played
scrum half in every game this year, helping lead the team to a
second place finish in the league and an unbelievably close OT loss
in the playoffs that knocked them out of the gold medal game. He
led the team in scoring with 30 points and was named an OCAA
All-Star and MVP of his team.
"He is constantly leading the team by example and is always the
one to set the bar in the first 10 minutes of the game," said coach
Kyle O'Neill. "Playing scrum half, he
quarterbacked our forwards around the field. A fearless player, he
would take on anybody that got in his way, and was also arguably
our best tackler. When we needed someone to step up, he was always
fit for the challenge. He will be a key returning player next year,
and I am very proud of him."
John and Harpell both receive a cheque for $500, a school ring and
individual trophies.
