ST. CLAIR 2, DURHAM 1
WINDSOR, Ont. - The St. Clair College women's softball team completed their OCAA regular season on Tuesday night earning a hard fought doubleheader split with Durham College from Oshawa, Ont. The Saints lost 3-2 in the first game and then went eight innings to win in walk-off fashion by a score of 2-1 in the second game.
St. Clair jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead after the first inning in the opening game but Durham scored a run in each of the next three innings to seize a 3-1 advantage. The Saints made it interesting in the seventh inning scoring a run but with the tying and winning runners aboard couldn't get the key hit. Sara Stiller (Windsor, Ont./Holy Names) took the loss on the mound for St. Clair with Skyler Patteson (Guelph, Ont.) recording two RBIs on a pair of singles to account her team's scoring.
In Game 2, St. Clair and Durham were locked scoreless until the sixth inning where they traded runs but the teams needed extra innings to decide a winner. With the international tie-breaker rule forcing an automatic runner on second base to start the inning, Patteson made an outstanding diving play on a Durham bunt attempt to help keep the visitors scoreless.
St. Clair was able come to bat with a chance to win in the bottom of the eighth inning. After moving the go-ahead run to third base, Michaela Rilett (Windsor, Ont./Kennedy) provided a deep fly to right field that easily scored Alexa Georgiou (Windsor, Ont./Assumption) to secure the win for St. Clair. Georgiou pitched all eight innings for the Saints surrendering only five hits while striking out five Durham batters. Alexandra Senft (Windsor, Ont./Walkerville) led St. Clair with three hits.
With the split St. Clair finishes with an 18-6 record and in a tie with Fanshawe College (London) for first place in the OCAA standings. By virtue of the tie-breaking procedure the Saints will claim the OCAA regular season crown and the top seed at the provincial championship tournament being hosted in Kitchener by Conestoga College this weekend Oct. 21-22.
