ST. CLAIR 6, HUMBER 1
The St. Clair Saints and Humber Hawks met tonight in a match-up of two OCAA powerhouses, and the girls did not disappoint. The squads dislike for each other was apparent, and the atmosphere at Wildwood Park was electric.
Humber put the first run on the board in the bottom of the first when Jessica O'Quinn laid down a perfect sac bunt. Unfortunately for the Hawks, a base running error killed the rally as they were thrown out at third to end the inning.
The St. Clair offence responded immediately, with Alexa Georgiou - who had already pitched a beauty against Conestoga - continuing her strong play with a two RBI knock up the middle to give the Saints their first lead of the night.
After a clean second inning in which both starters looked to settle in, St. Clair seemed to grab the momentum in the bottom of the third. With a runner 90 feet from home, Jordan Beauchesne laid down a sacrifice to make the lead two. Two batters later, the Saints added another run courtesy of a Rian Desbiens RBI single to the right side. Jacqueline O'Quinn was struggling with control, as she hit her second batter of the game in the inning. The third out was finally recorded, but the game had clearly shifted with the Saints going up by three.
Pitching ace Georgiou continued to silence the potent Humber Hawks bats, and two and a half innings later the score remained 4-1. With the Hawks opportunities dwindling, the Saints slammed the door by adding three insurance runs in their half of the sixth. Kallie Desjarlais, Amelia Maniuk and Georgiou all drove runs in.
A double from Hilary Redrup was all the Hawks could muster in the top of the seventh, and the game ended with a 7-1 final.
Luckily for Humber they will have a chance for revenge tomorrow, but first they must deal with Conestoga in the 10 a.m. semi-final. The Saints now have two opportunities to lock up the OCAA championship tomorrow, and the team has to like their chances after today's performance.
