HUMBER 10, MOHAWK 3
MISSISSAUGA, Ont. - The Humber Hawks, defending OCAA champions, opened their season on home turf with a 10-3 over Hamilton's Mohawk Mountaineers on Tuesday afternoon at Wildwood Park.
The Hawks banged out 15 hits on the night, led by Kelsey Bardy's 3-for-4 effort at the plate. Bardy also scored three times and stole two bases. Four other Hawks had big nights as Jacqueline O'Quinn, Jessica O'Quinn, Jessica Raymond and Olivia Crossley each chipped in with two hits apiece. Crossley and Jessica O'Quinn led both teams with two RBI each. Jessica O'Quinn's night did not stop there as she stole four bags as well.
Rookie Jesse Ulens toed the rubber for her first ever college game, and she got the win, pitching five innings and allowing just two runs. She allowed the two runs in the first inning as the visiting Mountaineers put together a few hits to open the scoring on the night. Ulens then settled in and held Mohawk scoreless over the next four innings. OCAA Player of the Year Jessica O'Quinn came in to get the save, pitching the last two innings, allowing a single run.
"I am happy to see that Jesse got her first college win in her first game," said Hawks head coach Bob Acton. "It is important to the team that we have another capable arm to provide us with quality innings with playing so many games in a short period of time."
The home stand will continue on Thursday afternoon as the Hawks will host Seneca College in a doubleheader at Wildwood Park. The game times are set for 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. All games are free to watch, and the Humber SAA will be in attendance to sign up people for Hawks Nation.

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. - Defence was the big factor as the defending Ontario Colleges Athletic Association women's fastball champions, the Humber Hawks, were too much for the visiting Mohawk Mountaineers in the regular season curtain raiser in Mississauga on Tuesday (Sep. 10). The Hawks scored a 10-3 victory in a game where rookie Mohawk pitcher Niki Grover was the victim of several unearned runs as the Mountaineers committed six errors.
A lack of clutch hitting didn't help either, according to Mohawk head coach Brian Weller.
"We left 12 on base," said Weller. "We were hitting, but unfortunately we weren't getting the key hits."
Veteran Stephanie Duffin went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Mountaineers, while newcomer Becky Rabchuk was 2-for-3.
Coach Weller knows he has to work on the defence, but he saw enough to feel this team will come together this season. "Humber is the defending champion, and they had already been in tournament play, while this was our first game," said Weller.
Mohawk opens its home schedule Friday (Sep. 13) when the Conestoga Condors of Kitchener visit Mohawk Sports Park for a doubleheader, starting at 5:30 pm.
