ST. CLAIR 7, SENECA 2
The Seneca Sting sent their ace to the mound Saturday morning, but the bats of the St. Clair Saints were just too much for even Lauren McLaughlin to handle. The Saints exploded for three runs in the first and third innings to take a commanding lead which they would maintain throughout the seven-inning game at Newnham Field.
St. Clair led off the game with a walk by Jessica Russo and followed that up with a single to set up runners on the corners. Alexa Georgiou failed on a bunt attempt which caught Russo off third base. Sting catch Natalie Chiarotto alertly threw the ball to third, but sailed the ball over the third baseman's head leading to the first run of the game. Jordan Beauchesne aggressively rounded second and moved onto third on the error.
Beauchesne would score on the triple by Allison Telfer while Telfer later came home on a sacrifice by Kallie Desjarlais for the third run of the inning. McLaughlin struck out Kayla Lindquist to end the inning.
The Saints struck with their second three-run inning in the third following a leadoff single once again by Russo. Beauchesne followed up with a single to score Russo all the way from first while Georgiou would hit a double to set up runners on second and third. Timely hitting was key for the Saints all day as Telfer struck again with a two-run single for a 6-0 lead. The Saints may have scored more in the had it not been for a sensational, over the shoulder, diving catch by Victoria Whidden who was able to double up Telfer to end the inning.
The Sting got on the board in the bottom half of the third as Shannon Gould reached on a walk. McLaughlin would drive her home with a double lined to centre field for her first of two RBIs in the game.
Pitching took over in the middle of the game as the teams were held scoreless for three innings until Georgiou scored off the bat of Lindquist in the seventh. The Sting would answer in the home half of the inning on a triple by Gould to score Renee Tulk for the final score of the game.
Telfer was 3-for-4 with three RBIs while Beauchesne also had three hits for the visitors. McLaughlin led the Sting with two hits while striking out nine.
Seneca (1-3) gets back in action on Tuesday as they host the Conestoga Condors (2-2) at 6 and 8 p.m. while St. Clair will host Mohawk Wednesday (0-5) in a double header at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.
