CONESTOGA 9, MOHAWK 8 (9 INNINGS)
They scored lots of runs, but gave up a bunch too. The Mohawk women's fastball team dropped an OCAA season opening doubleheader to Conestoga, a 9-8 extra inning decision and then 12-11 in the nightcap at Budd Park in Kitchener, Wednesday (Sep. 12).
In game one the teams were tied 8-8 after 7-innings, before the Condors pulled it out on the international tie-breaker. Under the extra inning system, teams get to start out with a runner in scoring position and Conestoga came through with the victory.
Mountaineers head coach Brian Weller said "We had a smattering of hits throughout the lineup, but we basically lost the game because of early season physical and mental errors."
Veteran Stephanie Duffin led Mohawk at the plate with two walks and two singles and scored three runs.
Jessica Denstedt pitched the complete game, but suffered the loss.
Newcomer Jessica Entwistle also had a route going performance in game two, but lost when Conestoga, down 11-6, scored six times in the bottom of the 7th frame for their 12-11 verdict.
Once again, mental errors led to the Mountaineers' downfall, according to coach Weller.
Nicole Leitch went 4-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and two singles. She was also hit by a pitch. Duffin and Rochelle Day each scored three times in a losing cause.
Mohawk hits the road again Sunday (Sep. 16) when they visit the Seneca Sting with a rare starting time of 10:30 in the morning.
The Mountaineers don't see their home field until Thursday (Sep. 20), when Durham checks into town for a twin bill starting at 5:30 pm at Mohawk Sports Park.
