TORONTO – Ontario Collegiate Recreation (OCR) is excited to announce the selection of two Student Leadership Award recipients for the 2024-25 season.
This award is given to student leaders who have significant involvement in their institution's campus recreation programs, outstanding leadership, positively motivates their peers, and whose involvement has greatly enhanced the athletic and recreation program on their respective campus.
Students were recognized for their high level of commitment, passion, and leadership to their campus recreation programs. Involvement varied from nominees who were experts in a given activity, or extremely passionate about encouraging others to participate.
Mabroor Butt of George Brown College has been a significant member of its campus recreation department for three years, becoming the face of the department among the student population. A self-proclaimed extramural athlete recruiter, Mabroor is always looking for athletes to fill spots on George Brown teams. A friendly and welcoming demeanor stands out as one of Mabroor’s admirable characteristics.
A varsity soccer athlete, Mabroor competed in extramural volleyball the past two seasons but took on the role of coach this season to provide other student-athletes an opportunity to play, showcasing tremendous growth and selflessness. As an extramural indoor soccer and volleyball coach, Mabroor provides encouragement and a positive atmosphere. Through this experience as a campus recreation ambassador, Mabroor now wants to pursue certification in coaching and officiating and work in the field of recreation.
"As a student ambassador for campus recreation and athletic facilities, Mabroor has been an advocate for campus wellness programs, constantly striving to engage new students in recreational activities and events," praised Wendy Roberts-Simpson, Campus Recreation and Wellness Coordinator at George Brown. "Mabroor’s involvement across so many different areas is an indication to his passion for community building and commitment to enhancing the student experience at George Brown."
Courtney Semach of Humber Polytechnic’s contributions to recreational programming, services and communication continue to soar above and beyond the expectations of a student-employee. Whether in the facility running a clock or tracking game stats, or behind the scenes updating standings and organizing prizes, Courtney's ability to think ahead to what is needed next is unmatched.
As a participant with the women's hockey team, Courtney has moved up to a regular goalie spot due to a commitment to training and skill development over the past two seasons. Courtney packs and carries the team gear, fills water bottles, and ensures that the change room is left clean after each use.
"Courtney's knowledge of our department's programs, services and schedules is a huge help when it comes to promoting activities to new students at service fairs or open houses, or to those current students who are non-users," said Jennifer O'Reilly, Humber Recreation and Sport Coordinator. "She is kind and welcoming to students who may be afraid to ask questions or get involved. She shows her face at these events as well as most of the programs these students are being encouraged to get involved in, breaking down barriers to participation."
Mabroor and Courtney received their awards at the OCR plenary at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association general meeting being held in Toronto from May 5-8.
