ETOBICOKE, Ont. - Humber's varsity men's volleyball team has added some serious size and skill with the recent signing of new recruits Alex Stefaniuk and Kamyn Wilkins. These players are two of the province's most sought after high school recruits and will look to crack the starting line-up of a team that is only one year removed from a national championship.
Humber will add yet another outside hitter to their arsenal as highly-touted recruit Wilkins has chosen to sign with Humber. The 6-foot-2 eighteen-year old is a very versatile player that can play any position on the court. When asked about what his goals are at Humber, Wilkins confidently said "to be the best there is."
His intense focus and knowledge of the game will give Kamyn an edge when he goes to the net against some of the more polished players in the OCAA. If he can harness his natural ability and combine it with intuitive mind for the game, Kamyn has the potential to be a game changer. Former men's assistant coach and family friend, Dean Wylie, has watched Kamyn play for a number of years and noted "he is a cagy, smart player capable of playing any position on the floor."
Kamyn has set a number of goals on the court but is also shooting for some high standards off the court. He will be enrolling in the General Arts and Sciences program in the fall and is setting his sights on becoming an honours student. He feels the discipline and structure built into the varsity program will help stabilize his academic life and afford him the opportunity to succeed in the classroom.
Stefaniuk will walk in and become the team's tallest player. Standing 6-foot-10, Alex will automatically be a force down the middle that few OCAA opponents will be able to match up with. He has already proven that he has a winning pedigree taking home gold medals at the provincial and national level. Alex played his club volleyball with the Pakmen, along with fellow recruit Wilkins, and his high school ball with Woodland. His recent selection to Ontario's high performance centre this summer along with 40 other top provincial players will add to his experience all while he builds out his already impressive volleyball resume.
While Alex possesses many of the intangibles that will make him a great player, he is well aware that he will need to put in the work to succeed at the next level. When asked what will be his biggest challenge this season, Alex respectfully said, "the heightened level of competition." If he progresses the way he has at previous levels, the heightened competition will soon be an afterthought.
Along with the varsity volleyball program, Alex's passion for photography also enticed him to select Humber. Entering the Multimedia, Design and Development program, he hopes to find a career in web design upon graduation. Outside of volleyball, his favourite activities include art, music, photography and skateboarding.
Camp opens in less than three months and in that time Kamyn and Alex will be working diligently to prove that they belong and hopefully bring Humber back into the national spotlight.
