SHERIDAN 3, CONESTOGA 0 (FINAL)
OAKVILLE, Ont. - In many ways the world of sports can be like art - performances are subject to interpretation. They differ however, in that regardless of personal opinion the scoreboard trumps all other opinions.
So while the performance of the Sheridan Bruins men's volleyball team (12-8, 5-3 OCAA) may have left something to be desired from an aesthetic standpoint, they picked up their second straight win with a 3-0 triumph over Conestoga.
"Ultimately at the end of the match it's about having the victory, so we made quite a few errors, they made quite a few errors but we managed to get points when we needed them the most," assistant coach Mike Russell said. "It's about how you finish the set and we managed to do enough to win each one. It wasn't pretty and I think it's combination of things. We had two guys playing a position on the court where they normally would, so it was a new experience for guys to try that. We need a stronger effort next week if we want to compete well against Humber."
The first two sets were marred by several errors from the double-blue, but their level of execution picked up once they hit the 20s and were able to win both with scores of 25-20 and 25-23.
For a brief moment in the third it looked like the Bruins might run away with the set, but Conestoga being clawing their way back into it before the home side shut the door with a 25-18 win.
Josh Butler led the way with a match-high 16 points (11 kills, three aces, two blocks) while Jeremy Fantin chipped in with nine (six kills, three blocks) and Cody Williams (eight kills) and Frank Pento (seven kills, one block) each had eight.
They will close out the first semester by hosting Humber on December 7 and Russell says that it's good to go into that match-up with some positive momentum.
"Anytime you win, it's positive so from that perspective, that's good," he said. "If we play well next week and beat Humber, we'll be in the exact same spot we were a year ago at this time (6-3). All of a sudden from having all kinds of different line-ups all year long we've managed to get the job done. Even if we are not successful next week, 5-4 based on all the new players we have this year, all the injuries we've dealt with and other issues, we'll feel alright going into the second semester."
Blue notes: For the first time since the start of the OCAA West campaign, the Bruins followed up a result with the exact same result. Prior to their back-to-back wins over St. Clair and Conestoga, they had gone win, loss, win, loss, win, loss. It will actually be their second meeting of the season against Humber, having dropped a five-set non-conference match-up in the final of the Seneca tournament in October.
