MEN'S BASEBALL ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Miguel Cienfuegos, St. Clair
First-year player Miguel Cienfuegos (Laval, Que.) was named Championship MVP at provincials. Cienfuegos went 2-for-3 with a double, driving in a run in St. Clair's opening 3-1 victory over Durham. He then went 2-for-3 with a walk, driving in three and scoring once in St. Clair's 9-1 win over Humber. In the gold medal game, Cienfuegos got a hit and scored twice as St. Clair downed Fanshawe 7-4.
MEN'S GOLF ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Josiah Dixon, Niagara
He needed a three-hole playoff and a scorecard error, but Niagara's Josiah Dixon (Bognor) ultimately won the men's individual championship at nationals. Dixon finished the 54-hole tournament at five-under par. He shot his first two rounds in the 60s. Dixon becomes just the second OCAA student-athlete to win individual gold medals at both provincials and nationals in the same season.
Matt Lemay, Georgian
Georgian's Matt Lemay (Waterloo) was awarded a bronze medal for his third-place finish at nationals. Lemay finished the 54-hole tournament at one-over, shooting under par in two of his three rounds. Lemay closed the competition strong, shooting a one-under 71 in the final day of competition. It is Lemay's second straight individual bronze medal at nationals.
WOMEN'S GOLF ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Addison Wallwin, Georgian
Addison Wallwin (Barrie) won the women's individual championship at nationals. Wallwin, who was named a CCAA All-Canadian prior to the start of the event, continued her consistent play, completing the 54-hole tournament with a three stroke advantage over her next closest competitor. She becomes the second Georgian student-athlete to win national individual gold since Katie Ferguson won gold in 2000 and 2002.
MEN'S RUGBY ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Alex Sicker, Fleming
First-year player Alex Sicker (Norwood) scored a pair of tries in Fleming's 69-12 win over Loyalist on Oct. 22. Sicker ended the six-game regular season with seven tries and one convert totaling 37 points. Fleming finished tied with St. Lawrence-Kingston atop the East Division standings at 5-1, but won the tiebreaker, giving the Knights a division championship and a bye into the OCAA semi-finals.
WOMEN'S RUGBY ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Kelsie Minnie, St. Lawrence-Kingston
First-year player Kelsie Minnie (Trenton) scored a try as St. Lawrence-Kingston held on to defeat Algonquin 19-17 on Oct. 23. It was Minnie's first career try in six matches. These teams will play once again in the OCAA semi-final, with the winner facing Fleming for the OCAA championship. St. Lawrence swept the season series 2-0, outscoring Algonquin 50-34.
WOMEN'S RUGBY SEVENS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Kirsten Archer, Sheridan
First-year fly half Kirsten Archer (Orillia) scored two tries and added a convert as Sheridan defeated Mohawk 22-12 on Oct. 22, an outcome that ultimately sent the Bruins to provincials. Archer scored another try in a 22-10 loss to Humber. Sheridan finished in fourth place in the regular season standings. Sheridan hosts the OCAA women's rugby sevens provincials on Nov. 5.
MEN'S SOCCER ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Andre Lewin, Mohawk
Second-year striker Andre Lewin (Brampton) scored the most important goal in Mohawk's season. With the Mountaineers trailing Durham 2-1 in stoppage time, Lewin took a pass from Semir Ibrahimi (Stoney Creek) and had a beautiful one-time touch for the tying goal, sending the match into overtime. Mohawk ultimately prevailed 3-2, as the Mountaineers advance to the OCAA quarter-finals.
WOMEN'S SOCCER ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Rebecca Spratt, Humber
First-year forward Rebecca Spratt (Mississauga) scored in the 27th minute for what was ultimately the game-winning goal as Humber defeated Durham 2-0 to advance to the OCAA quarter-finals. Spratt led Humber with seven goals during the regular season in 10 matches played. Humber now tangles with host St. Clair at the belairdirect OCAA Women's Soccer Championship on Oct. 27.
WOMEN'S SOFTBALL ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Rebecca Ropp, Durham
Second-year shortstop Rebecca Ropp (Milverton) was named Championship MVP at provincials. Ropp went 2-for-4 including a double while scoring two times in Durham's 10-3 win over Fanshawe to open the tournament. She followed this a hit and a run in Durham's 8-4 win over St. Clair. In the gold medal game, Ropp hit a two-run home run to put her team in front. She went 3-for-4 as Durham ultimately won 11-6.
MEN'S TEAMS OF THE WEEK
Niagara, Men's Golf
The Niagara Knights won the men's team title at nationals with a 54-hole team score of 297. Niagara claimed the championship by one shot. The Knights were made up of individual champion Josiah Dixon (Bognor), Evan Littlefield (Thunder Bay), Benjamin Kenel (Hamilton), Brett Shewchuk (Thunder Bay) and Logan Lammerant (Seaforth). It marks Niagara's first national title in men's golf since 2005.
St. Clair, Men's Baseball
For the fourth consecutive season, the St. Clair Saints are OCAA men's baseball champions. St. Clair is a perfect 12-0 in its provincial championship history, defeating Fanshawe 7-4 in the gold medal game, a rematch of last year's finale. Kyle Breitner (Mississauga) and Max Ayarza (Panama) were named championship all-stars. Since the OCAA added men's baseball in 2013, St. Clair has an overall record of 83-6.
WOMEN'S TEAMS OF THE WEEK
Durham, Women's Softball
Durham won its unprecedented 18th OCAA women's softball title with an 11-6 victory over St. Clair in the gold medal game. A week prior, Durham's spot at the championship was in jeopardy as they sat in fifth place with eight games remaining in the regular season. The Lords reeled off seven wins over that span to qualify for the championship, where they went 3-0 outscoring their opponents 28-7.
Georgian, Women's Golf
The Georgian women's golf team won the team title at nationals. The team of Addison Wallwin (Barrie), Emilie Tyndall (Kirkland, Que.) and Sady Beelik (Pefferlaw) won gold shooting a combined scored total of 456 to finish 14 strokes ahead of the second place Humber. It's the second straight year the Grizzlies have medaled at the event after taking bronze last year. This is also Georgian's third all-time team gold medal.
Humber, Women's Golf
The Humber women's golf team took the team silver medal at nationals, finishing 14 strokes behind OCAA-rival Georgian. The Humber team was made up of Sheila McKeen (Ottawa), Sonia Nagindas (Aurora) and Lindsay Voogt (Niagara-On-The-Lake). It is Humber's second consecutive team medal after winning gold last year. It is also Humber's 10th national women's team medal all-time.
