OAKVILLE, Ont. - As their OCAA debut draws closer the Sheridan
Bruins men's rugby team continue to build their infrastructure,
adding three assistant coaches - Trevor Figueira,
Rick Bria and Domenic Scuglia -
to the staff of head coach Carlos Moniz.
"I am very pleased to have Trevor, Rick and Domenic joining me in
building this program," said Moniz. "They will be a tremendous fit
for us because not only do each of them possess an exceptional
amount of technical rugby knowledge, but most importantly they
understand the hierarchy of the student-athlete model."
Trevor Figueira was the first side hooker for the Yeomen RFC for
13 years, and was the club captain for seven of those years. During
his playing days with the Yeomen, the club was a perennial front
runner in the Ontario senior first division culminating in an
extremely rare "triple-double" where the Yeomen won both the
Ontario Senior League and the McCormick Cup championships for three
consecutive years.
Subsequently, Trevor has remained active in the rugby community
and currently enjoys his role as head coach of the Yeomen Under 18
Rugby team.
Rick Bria has been a player and coach for the Yeomen Rugby Club
since 1980. He is currently the head coach of the Yeomen Under 16
Junior team and was the forwards coach with the Yeomen Women's
senior team from 2005 - 2008.
He has also coached at the high school level with Weston
Collegiate - where he won a Toronto championship - and is currently
with St. Jean Brebeuf Catholic High school. He is a tireless and
dedicated rugby coach.
Domenic Scuglia is the principal at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic
High School in Aurora. He is the co-founder of the Red Hot Rugby
Tournament, the largest and most prestigious high school rugby
tournament in Ontario and amongst the very best in North
America.
He was the head coach of York University from 1992-1999 and has
coached at the high school level with several schools, winning an
OFSAA bronze medal with Fr. Bressani Catholic High School.
He is the vice president and director in charge of junior rugby
with Rugby Ontario and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience
to Sheridan's coaching staff.
As a player, Domenic was a hooker on the first side and a former
captain of the Yeomen Rugby Club. He was also a player on the
Ontario Provincial Senior Men's team.
The official start date of the 2012 OCAA rugby season will be
September 12. The Bruins double-blue will play in the West Division
alongside Conestoga, Georgian, Humber and Mohawk.
They will play their home games at the Trafalgar Campus in
Oakville, but practice in Brampton.
