NIAGARA OVERTHROWS DURHAM TO GET INTO THE OCAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CONSOLATION FINAL
The Niagara Knights end the Durham Lords season with a consolation semi-final victory, 77-59.
The Niagara Knights were able to capture the second spot in the OCAA Women's Basketball Consolation Final with a victory over the Durham Lords, 77-53.
The Lords stuck with the Knights in the first quarter only trailing by 2 baskets, 14-10. The defensive stand out for the Lords, 1st year player out of Scarborough, Victoria Brody led the scoring with 4 points. While the Knights own rookie, Hope Brown matched Brody's scoring with 4 points as well.
The Knights opened up their lead by 7 at the end of the second quarter going into half time 31-24 over the Lords. The Lords OCAA All-Canadian and regular season lead scorer of the OCAA, Lindsay Panchan led her team with 7 points. The Knights Player of the Game, Courtney McPherson sank 3 baskets to put up 6 points of her own.
The Knights minimized their errors and pulled the game away from the Lords in a high scoring third quarter. 4th year player out of Niagara, Alyssa McCabe and 1st year player from Woodstock, Kim Shepard both put up 5 points each for the Knights. While Panchan continued to show why she was the OCAA scoring leader adding 5 of her own to the Lords total. The Knights out scored the Lords 25-14 and took a commanding 56-38 lead going into the fourth quarter.
2nd year player Dekota Kirby led the Lords in the fourth quarter with 8 points, hitting two long three-pointers that gave the Lords some life. 5th year player Kayla Marshall looking to end her OCAA career on a high note put up 6 points of her own for the Lords. The Knights kept up their scoring with McCabe adding 9 more to her total and Xuan Nguyen hitting a clutch corner three- pointer to give her 5 points in the quarter. The Lords were unable to claw their way back losing 77-59 to the Niagara Knights.
Panchan finishes her career leading the Lords in scoring with 15 points. Marshall put up 12 points, 3 steals and 3 rebounds for the Lords. Brody played an outstanding defensive game with 6 points, 4 steals and 5 rebounds.
For the Knights, McCabe lead the game with 25 points and 5 steals. McPherson dominated the boards as she picked up 17 rebounds and added 17 points for her team. While Nguyen contributed 13 points of her own in the victory for the Knights.
