SHERIDAN AT NIAGARA

WELLAND, Ont. - Thursday, Feb. 9 will see the Niagara College department of athletics and recreation Make Some Noise for Mental Health.

Make Some Noise for Mental Health is an award winning initiative founded in 2015 by the SAIT Trojans designed as a campaign to help raise awareness and break the stigma surrounding mental health on post-secondary campuses. The awareness campaign is intended to encourage conversation and open mindedness, and better promote resources and support available on campus and in the local community.

The Niagara College #MakeSomeNoise event will be held on February 9th during the Niagara Knights men's and women's volleyball doubleheader scheduled for a 6:00pm start at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre.

The event will feature a social media campaign championed by members of the nine Knights' intercollegiate athletic programs, event t-shirts and apparel, prize giveaways, and most importantly a service fair featuring local Niagara community groups that support and provide programming related to mental health. Attending members include CMHA Niagara Branch, Gateway Welland, Pathstone Mental Health Services, and Niagara College counselling services.

"The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association and the SAIT Trojans have done a fantastic job in bringing this truly worthwhile initiative to life" said Niagara College director of athletics and recreation Matthew Davies. "We look forward to welcoming members of the Niagara College community to help further the conversation about mental health awareness and programming that exists in Niagara."

There are plenty of ways for the Niagara College community to get involved with the Make Some Noise initiative. Supporters are encouraged to use #MakeSomeNoise on social media. Those planning on attending the Feb. 9 volleyball matches are also encouraged to bring noisemakers (compressed air horns are not permitted).  Additionally, all tickets sales during the evening will be donated to CMHA Niagara.
