BIG WEEKEND FOR OCAA VOLLEYBALL
« Back

February 12, 2010 - Heading into the last weekend in Volleyball there is still lots to sort out in terms of the playoff picture. Here's a brief look at how things could play out down the stretch in OCAA Volleyball

Men's Volleyball - East Division
In the East, Seneca has clinched first place and a bye into the OCAA Championship. The Sting are undefeated at 15-0 and still have three games remaining on their schedule, but the next closest team has four losses which ensures Seneca has wrapped up top spot in the East. The Durham Lords control their own destiny for the other bye in the East, needing a win over 3-12 Georgian in their last game to wrap up second place. If Durham happens to loss, Loyalist can secure second place with a win over Seneca. If both teams end with the same record, Durham holds the tie break over Loyalist as they won the season series 2-0.

The playoff picture becomes a little cloudy if both Durham and Loyalist lose this weekend as they would both wind up with five losses on the year. Trent and Algonquin could join them as they both currently sit with five losses on the year. Trent has one game remaining against Fleming P and Algonquin takes on Seneca and Georgian. Fleming has secured the sixth and final playoff spot in the East.

Men's Volleyball - West Division
In the West, the top four teams have been determined as Humber, Redeemer, Nipissing, and Mohawk have ensured themselves at least a top four finish in the West but where they finish within the top four is anyone's guess. Redeemer and Humber are currently in the driver's seat with two losses but one of the two will fall to three losses by the end of the season as they face off against each other at Humber on February 17th. Humber's road doesn't get any easier as they also face off against Nipissing and Canadore on the weekend prior to their game against Redeemer. If Mohawk hopes to capture the first round bye they have to win out and beat Redeemer in four sets or less on Saturday night and hope for some losses from the teams ahead of them to move up. The top of the bracket should be clearer come Monday as many of the top four teams square off against one another this weekend, but the division could come down to the last game of the season when Redeemer travels to Humber.

The bottom portion of the bracket sees three teams battling for two spots. Fanshawe, Niagara and Sheridan all have shots at one of the last two spots. Fanshawe needs a win in their last game over Mohawk to clinch a playoff spot. The most important game in this falls on the last game of the year when Niagara travels to Sheridan in game that could decide who's going to the playoffs and who's going home.

Women's Volleyball - West Division
The top two spots in the West Region are wrapped up as Humber and Nipissing have secured a bye into the OCAA Championship at Cambrian. These two teams square off on Saturday in a game that could decided who is crowned OCAA West Division Champion. Humber currently sits at 16-1 on the year and Nipissing is at 16-2. Humber's only loss on the season came at the hands of Nipissing 3-2. Humber can clinch top spot in the West with a win over Nipissing in four sets or less. In Nipissing beats Humber and Sheridan on the weekend they wrap up top spot in the West.

Fanshawe, Mohawk and Niagara all have a realistic shot at capturing a home court playoff game. This situation should play its self out as Niagara takes on Mohawk before the end of the season.

Three teams remain in the hunt for sixth and final playoff spot in Canadore (9-9), St. Clair (7-11) and Sheridan (7-10). Canadore can end all hope for the other two teams with a win over Sheridan. Canadore can clinch with one win in their last two games. St. Clair has to win out and hope that Canadore losses both games and that Sheridan loses at least once to force the tie-breaking procedures into play. This situation could play its self out as early as Saturday afternoon if Canadore defeats Sheridan. Sheridan has to win two of its final three games against Canadore, Nipissing and Niagara to force tie-breaking procedures into play, but could capture sole possession of sixth place if they win out.

Women's Volleyball - East Division
Durham has clinched top spot in the East. They have one game remaining against Georgian, but would win the tiebreaker over them regardless of what happens in their final game on February 17th. The rest of the standings depends on Georgian as they have three games remaining and could finish anywhere from second to fifth depending on the results of their last three games. Trent can grab second spot in the East with a win over Fleming combined with a Georgian loss. Loyalist can secure third spot with a win and two Georgian losses. Cambrian could also move into fourth with a win over George Brown combined with two Georgian losses. At the end of the day, three teams could ended tied for second spot in the East with 15 wins and tie-breaking procedures would come into full effect. All five team above, Durham, Georgian, Loyalist, Trent and Cambrian have earned a playoff berth. The last playoff spot comes down to Seneca and La Cite. Seneca is currently in the driver's seat as one win in their final three games puts them in the playoffs. This could sort itself out Friday night if Seneca defeats Algonquin. If Seneca can't get the job done against the Thunder, La Cite would have to beat Seneca in less than five sets on Saturday to have a fighting chance at the playoffs. If this happens La Cite would then have to beat Georgian and hope that Seneca losses their last game to Loyalist for tie-breaking procedures to come into play.
