November 2, 2007 - The CCAA announced today the CCAA Soccer Athletes of the Month for October. The CCAA Athlete of the Month program recognizes student-athletes for their outstanding event performance and athletic accomplishments during that month. Awards are presented to one male and one female student-athlete in each conference participating in the CCAA Soccer; the five conferences are Atlantic Colleges Athletic Association (ACAA), Fédération québécoise du sport étudiant (FQSE) Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA), Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) and British Columbia Colleges Athletic Association (BCCAA).
From Ontario:
A first year Practical Nursing student at Mohawk College, rookie Heather Werkman has proven to be a dominant force on the field. As a fullback with the Mountaineers, Heather is a dedicated player, giving 100% on and off the field.
Striker Greg Remijn is in his third year of Business Marketing at Fanshawe College. In only five games, Greg scored 7 of 10 goals, averaging 1.4 goals per game and ranking him at the top of the West Division. Captain of the Falcons, Greg demonstrates quality leadership both on and off the pitch.
From British Columbia:
Defender Daniella Corlazzoli is in her 2nd year of Arts and Science at Langara College. Team captain and CCAA Tournament All-Star, Daniella has provided tremendous leadership on the field. A strong player defensively, she does an exceptional job organizing the back line and she has the ability to win balls in the air and intercept passes. Daniella has also proven to be a very skilled offensive player. Her solid judgment and great precision has created many scoring opportunities for her teammates. A major factor in Langara capturing their 4th consecutive British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association (BCCAA) regular season title, Daniella ended the season with 5 goals in 14 games, ranking her 8th in the BCCAA.
Veteran Corey Birza is a fourth year student with the Capilano College Blues. Throughout the season, Corey demonstrated his creative play, penetrating forward runs and hard work on the field. For the second consecutive year, he has established himself as the league’s leading scorer with 12 goals in 14 games. Corey’s performance lead the Blues to the BCCAA regular season title for the 3rd consecutive year. His outstanding play has earned him various awards and acclamations, including 2004 BCCAA Rookie of the Year, 4-time BCCAA 1st Team All Star, 2-time CCAA All Canadian and 2007 BCCAA Player of the Year.
From Alberta:
In only her first year with the Concordia University College of Alberta Thunder, Chelsea Johnson was instrumental in her team’s success. Exhibiting confidence and tremendous leadership skills, Chelsea led the Thunder to a 4-2 record in six games. She conceded only three goals and shut out her opponents to capture four victories.
NAIT’s Scott McLeod recently completed his 4th year of eligibility. The first year Digital Media Design student has been instrumental in the Ook’s undefeated season. Anchoring the defence, Scott is continuously called upon to stop the opposing striker. His incredible pace and poise on the ball have led his team to a 7-0-1 record. While almost unbeatable defensively, Scott is also a threat in the attacking end. His ability to jump has made him the best header of the ball in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) North Division. Scott’s skill has enabled his team to give up only two goals, moving them to a more attacking oriented system of play.
From Quebec:
Anchoring the defense, first year student-athlete Kathleen McGrath is studying Health Sciences at Dawson College. Named Quebec Student Sport Federation (QSSF) All Star and Most Valuable Player (MVP), Kathleen’s dedication and perseverance are unmatched. A proven leader and solid player, she rarely makes mistakes on the field and performs with ease.

Named captain of his team for the 2nd consecutive year, Samir played 706 minutes out of a total of 720 minutes. Throughout the season, he has proven to be effective in setting up numerous goals and shutting down opponents.
From the Atlantic:
First year Bsc Animal Sciences student Erin Durkee’s exceptional performance has made a direct impact on the Nova Scotia Agricultural College Rams and the Atlantic Colleges Athletic Association (ACAA). Very skilled offensively, Erin leads the ACAA with 11 goals. Demonstrating leadership and commitment in both practice and in play, Erin is a natural scorer with a sharp eye and tremendous speed.
Veteran Scott Hachey is a 4th year student with the University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves. Scott has proven himself to be an offensive catalyst for the team, scoring 10 goals in seven games. He continuously strives to improve his skills to become a better distributor and increasing his tactical knowledge of the game. Committed to training, Scott has further developed his one on one skills, making him a better attacker all around and ultimately, a more dangerous player offensively. Off the field, Scott his heavily involved within the community as a member of the Seawolves while also promoting physical activity.
