September 21, 2009 - Rugby - Division II Recap
Coming off of an undefeated, Division II championship season, the St.Lawrence Vikings men’s rugby squad traveled to Grizzly Country to play Georgian College to open their 2009 OCAA season.
Georgian rugby was well prepared for the visiting SLC rugby squad in their opening match, handing the defending champs a 27-0 loss to open the season. The Georgian forward pack dominated on the day and benefited from hard, straight running on the narrow Georgian pitch.
The Grizzlies were clearly more intense and did well at the breakdowns by cleaning out rucks and providing quality balls for their backs to use offensively. In turn, they continually punched holes in the SLC mid-field defense making the home side difficult to stop moving forward.
Five Grizzlied reached the score sheet, with Ryan Brown hitting two converts and one penalty kick. Teammates Will Johnston, Alex Groves, Scott Varley and Chris Foley all added tries in the game.
A notable bright spot for the Vikings was the play of Dylan Bibby, the open side flanker. He was fierce in defense and provided a number of cover tackles that stopped Georgian from scoring more tries. As a team SLC proved their worth by not giving up mentally and allowing only one try in the second half.
In the second game of the week, the silver medal team from a year ago, Loyalist Lancers squared off against the Fleming Lindsay Auks in the closest game of the week where the Lancers topped the Auks 30-22.
Loyalist rode the sure foot of Shane Christie as he kicked for two converts and added two penalty kicks in the game. Alex Turnbull of the Auks also had a sure foot, knocking in two converts and one penalty kick himself.

Six other Excalibur players made it on the score sheet by adding tries in the victory, (Graham Abbott, Will Gibson, Shawn Gibson, Philip Gleeson, Kevin MacLean and Tim Row).
The Seneca Sting were victorious in the second Division I game of the week, sealing the 29-8 victory over the Fleming Peterborough Knights.
