GALEA THROWING STRIKES IN EUROPE

NETHERLANDS - Shannon Galea's passion for sports and determination has landed the highly accomplished athlete of UOIT and Durham College a roster position on the women's Den Bosch Gryphons professional softball team in the Netherlands.

Softball has always been a part of Galea's life, whether it is for McMaster University, Durham College, the Kitchener Coyotes or the Pickering Heat. Travelling overseas to play in the Netherlands is just another amazing opportunity for the 24-year-old Oshawa native to experience.

"The experience playing in the Netherlands has been wonderful. Meeting athletes from around the world who love the same sport as I do is an honour," said Galea. "The women's league is comprised of several international athletes consisting of those from China, Australia, USA and Canada. My team and coaches have been extremely welcoming and accommodating. I feel privileged as an athlete to have this opportunity."

In the several years playing ball, Galea has proven herself to be a top-notch player. In 2009, she was named top-pitcher and top player by Softball Canada at the Canadian Junior Nationals. She was also named an all-star pitcher in 2010 by Softball Canada at the Senior Women's Championship.

During the 2011 school year at Durham College, Galea was named OCAA championship and regular season top pitcher. The Lords had one of their most successful seasons, winning the OCAA Championship and finishing as OIWFA National Bronze Medalists.

"My career in both University and College Athletics has helped me take my training to the next level. I have learned a lot through sport and the endless opportunities that can arise," continued Galea.

Having participated in rowing and squash at UOIT, athletics has given her a better perspective on diverse training methods and how relatable each sport can be when learning basic fundamentals.

"This knowledge has also helped me with developing future athletes in various sports with a focus on working with young pitchers and softball athletes."

Galea was inspired to pursue this opportunity from shared experiences of previous teammates.  Durham College coaches Jim Nemish and Rosemary Theriault, as well as previous coaches, Pat Acton and Todd Martin, were a big help in contacting the coaches overseas.

"The coaching network is very tight knit, which is something I hope to explore and utilize when I coach in the future."

With the season currently in full swing, the Gryphons are near the top of the standings.

She has also been presented the opportunity to attend the First Division European Cup in Enschede in August, for the Royal Greys of Belgium.
