OCAA HISTORY MADE IN NIAGARA FALLS - AGM RECAP
« Back

May 18, 2010 - The 2010 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association’s Annual General Meetings, hosted by Niagara College, took place in Niagara Falls at the Doubletree Hotel from May 2-6, 2010 and was celebrated for the passing of a few historical milestones for the organization.

For the first time in the 42 year history of the OCAA, the number of women’s varsity sport programs will outnumber the men’s varsity programs. As of the fall 2010 the OCAA will offers nine men’s varsity sports and ten women’s varsity sports in both league and tournament formats.

Funding for student-athletes was also addressed at the meetings, resulting in a significant increase to Category “B” Bursary funding availability. All-Academic Scholarships have also been integrated into the organization, financially assisting honours student-athletes in their pursuit of academic and athletic success.

With rule changes, 2010-11 schedules and other related items for the upcoming season firmly in place, listed below are some of the highlights that will be taking effect for the 2010-2011 season.

OCAA ACCEPTS WOMEN’S RUGBY FOR 2010

For the first time since women’s golf in 1999-2000, a new woman’s sport will be joining the OCAA. Women’s rugby continues to gain momentum and will make it’s official debut in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) in the fall of 2010 as a “trial varsity sport”.

The league will consist of a 10 game schedule, with a single round robin format. The season will cumulate with a final four playoff round and championship game.

“I think it is very exciting for the students and moving this league forward is what the students wanted us to do,” said Jane Bolin of Fleming College in Lindsay, who has been the driving force behind the development of this new sport and will accept the responsibility of Senior Convenor for the inaugural season. “This is only the beginning and I think it will really take off. We already have strong numbers and once schools who are not currently involved see how solid the league is, I feel it will generate more interest with some of the bigger schools.”

In addition to the regular season league and post season schedule, the OCAA women’s rugby league will also consist of a kick off tournament that will be open to all recently committed teams as well as other OCAA member institutions that may be working towards joining the league in the future.

The rugby hotbed schools of Loyalist College, St. Lawrence College-Kingston, Seneca College, Humber College and Fleming College - Lindsay, will all field teams for the inaugural season.

To become a fully accepted sport, each new OCAA varsity sport must successfully complete a two year trial period before the league is accepted as a full varsity sport. For additional information on the women’s rugby program, contact your local college’s Athletic Department.

OCAA INCREASES CATEGORY “B” ATHLETIC BURSARY FUNDING

The OCAA has increased their Category “B” Athletic Bursary funding parameters beginning in the 2010-2011 season. While Category “A” funding requires a combination of academic and athletic performance to be able to be eligible for the award, Category “B” funding is designed to provide additional funding for student-athletes who demonstrated financial need via an application process through their respective college’s Financial Aid departments. Previously this award was capped at $500 and will now allow bursarys to reach a $2,500 maximum.

OCAA ESTABLISHES ALL-ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS

The OCAA has established an All-Academic Scholarship opportunity to assist student-athletes who achieve All-Academic honours status at their respective institutions. The academic driven scholarship may be developed at each member institution in an amount not to exceed $250 per academic year.

VOLLEYBALL LEAGUES ADD A PAIR OF TEAMS

The OCAA is proud to announce the Conestoga Condors have joined the Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Leagues leagues starting in the 2010-2011 season. Both the men’s and women’s teams will participate in the OCAA’s West Division respectively.

OCAA NAMES BREAST CANCER AND PROSTATE CANCER AS RECIPIENTS FOR FALL PROVINCIAL FUNDRAISING INITIATIVE

After a successful inaugural campaign to raise funds for a selected charity in 2009-2010, the OCAA is proud to announce our member institutions will once again collectively join in a province wide fundraising initiative.

During the fall of the 2010-2011 season, OCAA teams will have an opportunity to support the OCAA Plays For Breast Cancer and OCAA Plays for Prostate Cancer campaigns. Each participating school has an opportunity to be creative in their fundraising styles and embrace their local community in raising monies for the worthy causes.
